LAN Party
Submitted by dmt on Wed, 2008-10-29 10:04LAN PARTY! It's gonna be good. Pay $5 ahead of time to Travis or Ryan and make sure to get your name on a list so we know how much FOOD to get, or RSVP with them by email and pay when you get here.
The party will be in Darwin 25 and 28 as usual. The fun starts at 7:00 PM as usual, and as usual there will probably be several people there early. We'll probably start with Babo and go to TF once more people show up, and there will most likely be console gaming in one of the other rooms.

Computer Graphics guest speakers
Submitted by dmt on Tue, 2008-10-21 19:40CS375 (Computer Graphics) is hosting guest speakers Mike Farnsworth and Joel Davis from Tippett Studios on the 28th to discuss computer animation. Pizza will be provided; Ledin said he was buying for 30 people, but there are far fewer than that in the class, so feel free to drop in. The class is in Darwin 37.
LAN Party
Submitted by dmt on Tue, 2008-09-30 12:59Our first LAN party of the semester is scheduled for Friday, October 17, which should be right after midterms for most people. Pay Travis or Ryan $5 for food beforehand so we know how much food to get (the meeting on the 14th would be a good time to pay), and be sure they put your name on a list so they remember that you paid.
We plan to have one big game of Team Fortress 2 followed by one big game of Unreal Tournament 2004. These games work best when we have at least a dozen people in them and more is better, so please don't split the user base. We might also have a Wii for anyone who isn't into first-person shooters, and a few people are bringing Animal Crossing for Nintendo DS. The fun and violence is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
Math Colloquium - PGP, Hashes, and Digital Signatures
Submitted by dmt on Thu, 2008-09-25 13:18Michael King, Joe Muller, and Dylan Field will be presenting on the subject of encryption as it applies to e-mail security.
Do you ever wonder how the messages you send over the internet are secure? Speakers will give a brief introduction to cryptography using RSA; an overview of PGP and how it is used to secure communication over the internet; and an overview of hash functions (with MD5 algorithm as an example) used for password protection and message integrity. This is a student project from the Fall 2007 Math 485 class (Introduction to Cryptography).
The presentation will be at Wednesday November 5 at 4:00 PM in Darwin 103. Come early (3:45) for coffee and cookies. Pizza will be provided after the talk.
Visit the Math Colloquium page for more information about the weekly Math colloquiums.
Math Colloquium - Ravi on Partial Computation of Extremely Large Numbers
Submitted by dmt on Thu, 2008-09-25 13:14Our own Bala Ravikumar will be giving a talk on how to approximate the computation of extremely large numbers that physically cannot be represented as plain binary code.
Numbers like 2^2^1000 are so large that even if every elementary particle in the universe is used to store one of its digits, it is still not possible to store the number. We address the problem of computing some of the specified digits of such numbers. Some interesting mathematical issues related to such computations will be discussed in this talk.
The presentation will be Wednesday October 1 at 4:00 PM in Darwin 103. Come early (3:45) for coffee and cookies. Pizza will be provided after the talk.
Visit the Math Colloquium page for more information about the weekly Math colloquiums.
